GOING DUTChHow Ajax are helping Chinese team Guangzhou unearth the next Johan Cruyff
| The Dutch giants have joined forces with the side from China to help discover and nurture the best Asian talent with a state-of-the-art training camp
LAST November mid-table Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F signed an agreement to partner up with Dutch giants Ajax.
The aim was to develop the best youth academy in China, helping the club and national team produce the finest players they can.
Guangzhou R&F have joined forces with Ajax for their youth academy
The Champions League winners were responsible for providing the coaching, while Guangzhou had to supply state-of-the-art facilities for the talent to blossom in.
And while it might be ambitious to think that they may uncover the next Johan Cruyff, Dennis Bergkamp or Patrick Kluivert, their approach certainly can't hurt.
Ed Engelkes, who coached Ajax's women's team from 2012-17, is overseeing the project as technical director.
Over the course of the next five years, he will manage a group of Ajax coaches who will all bring their own speciality to proceedings.
The facilities include perfect pitches
R&F Football School coaches 330 boys aged between eight and 17
The students live on the campus
The plan is to share their knowledge of developing a youth academy on a global level, which includes scouting, talent development and all supporting departments.
"It's a long-term commitment we made with R&F of five years, but maybe we will need a couple more years because we have to start with the basics," Engelkes, 54, revealed.
"When the fundamentals are not good, you have to start all over."
The setting for the academy is the sleepy city of Meizhou - some 250 miles from Guangzhou.
The young talents rest in their spacious rooms
They also have to take in normal school lessons, including learning English
But developing football skills is the primary focus
A southern province of Guangdong, it's an area known as a hotbed for young, talented players.
Practices at the academy mirror those at Ajax's, except there are greater numbers.
330 boys aged between eight and 17 sleep, eat and study school subjects at the site, alongside their football development.
The most promising kids are there on scholarships, while others have to pay to play.
So far, Guangzhou R&F's football academy boasts eight football pitches
The kids at Guangzhou R&F are trained by Ajax's best coaches
Their training sessions are hard and intense
Some of them are from further shores, seeing their families only once or twice a year.
As you can imagine, training sessions are hard and intense. And they're all captured on video and later analysed.
But the language barrier is sometimes an issue. With coaches speaking in English, instructions normally have to be translated by an interpreter.
Even so, Engelkes believes its imperative that the R&F Football School takes the basis of Ajax's famous HQ.
And all the action on the pitch is caught on video for later analysis
The partnership between Ajax and Guangzhou R&F could breed the next Messi or Ronaldo
Boys at Guangzhou R&F are given all they need to make it as a pro
"It's very important that an Ajax player -- and an R&F player -- has a certain attitude," he said.
"They must be creative. We want to think very attacking, attractive (football), taking initiative, but also be dominant in the game they play."
Interestingly, Guangzhou R&F have always been about playing good football, even if they've lived under the shadow of seven-time CSL champions Guangzhou Evergrande.
Managed by former Yugoslavia playmaker Dragan Stojkovic, who had a spell at Japan's Grampus Eight under Arsene Wenger, their blueprint has always been to play "the most beautiful football in China".
While some kids have to pay to be part of the academy, some are there on scholarship
Guangzhou R&F are backed by a real estate developer worth £5bn
Some cultural barriers have hindered Guangzhou R&F's youth talent
And even though they are backed by real estate developer R&F, a company believed to be worth £5bn, they are focusing on youth rather than bringing in expensive ready-made stars.
Engelkes has already noticed cultural barriers that may hinder some of the players' process.
Chinese children, he said, are used to being told what to do because of a rote-learning education system.
"They don't think for themselves... but if you are in the game, you need to make your own decisions," he claimed.
Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar signed off on the partnership with Guangzhou R&F
He was a member of the infamous Ajax team that last won the Champions League with mostly homegrown talent
Edwin van der Sar is hopeful the Guangzhou R&F deal can improve Ajax's brand in China
Education is still fundamental for Guangzhou R&F's youth talent
The multimillion-euro deal was signed off by Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar, who was keen to grow the club's brand in Asia.
“It is good for Ajax to be partnering with Guangzhou R&F Football Club," he said when the deal was announced last year.
"In recent years, we have been quite active in the Asian market. Youth is the core asset of our club and we are delighted that we can leverage our knowledge with an international partner like R&F.
"It is well known that for a club like Ajax it is hard to grow in the current European football industry. With initiatives like Ajax Coaching Academy we create opportunities to make alternative steps forward."
Eating together bring a sense of union to the scholars at Guangzhou R&F
Guangzhou R&F are hopeful this new approach will bring youth talent through
Football is likely to be the winner, said coach Engelkes
And China as a nation will only benefit from Ajax's expertise
For Engelkes, football will be the eventual winner.
"You have to extend and share your knowledge, and maybe (in return) that will bring us other things," Engelkes said.
And does that mean a Chinese Messi or Ronaldo could dominate world football in years to come?
"Why not? It's a big country so there must be talent here," he added.
